Mom Behind the Business: Shelli Morrow - The Cottage Basket

Updated: May 27, 2020

One thing we are super passionate about at The Village is taking time to shine light on all the amazing things MOMS are doing in our communities. We are SO EXCITED to begin our weekly “Mom Behind the Business” series featuring local MOM business owners! Each Monday we'll bring a new Mom Business Owner to the table for a little Q&A to gain some insight into her business and the advice she can pass on to other mamas.

First up, we had the pleasure of interviewing Shelli Morrow - the super sweet mama behind The Cottage Basket in Homewood, AL. Shelli is a beautiful soul inside and out, has a precious family and her love for the Lord shines through in all she does. We're blessed to call Shelli a friend and look forward to many more opportunities to keep our mamas in touch with her and her team at The Cottage Basket.

What is The Cottage Basket?

We're a gift shop specializing in Southern gifts and elegant decor!

How did you get started?

I started on a small dream. I wanted a place for people to go to get happies to bless others in times of hardship - wrapped and ready to go. It was totally a leap of giant faith!!! On a whim, I got a business license and went to the Atlanta Market and did lots of praying! I found 5 companies I knew I wanted to invest in and took it from there! We found our location and renovated it in 4 weeks to be ready to open in 6 weeks (from the time we signed our lease). It’s been so much fun from day 1!!

Why do you do it?

I love the buying process! Of course I do - ha! It’s like a shipping spree... but I love finding things that others love and that can bless them by coming in The Cottage Basket and finding a happy for someone! We love serving our customers and making a gift just the right fit for who or what they are looking for!! It’s a joy to see everyone leave with the perfect wrapped gift!

What are your most inspiring/motivating moments in business?

Winning Homewood’s Best Shop in 2019 and being in 4 write-ups was fun! Seeing the story of hope unfold {side note from The Village: you can read more about her story of hope here}, my amazing staff come together and work so well together! Adding on an additional space after 1 year of opening was crazy! Most of all, people finding joy when they come through the doors!! ❤️

One piece of advice for other moms dreaming of starting a business?

Fear will try and bring you down!! Step on it and keep trying! You will always have struggles but don’t let the fear keep you from trying! Even if you tried and it fails- you tried!!! Your heart should be proud!!💓

We love this insight from Shelli! It’s evident that her love for spreading joy is the fuel for everything she does!
