Welcome to Week 4 of our “Mom Behind the Business” series featuring local MOM business owners! Each Monday we bring a new Mom Business Owner to the table for a little Q&A to gain some insight into her business and the advice she can pass on to other mamas.
This week we interviewed Dr. Maggie Law - the super smart mama behind Law Orthodontics in Birmingham, AL. We just love the happy vibe Dr. Maggie puts into the world - her JOY is truly contagious!
What is your business?
My business is Law Orthodontics! I just opened on March 2nd, right in downtown Homewood. I’ve been in private practice since 2015 and I could not be more excited to have my own office to help those in community have healthy, beautiful, and functional bites and smiles. Our mission statement is something that is particularly important to me and my team! “We are a patient-centered practice working together provide exceptional care and efficient treatment outcomes with a strong emphasis on hospitality and modern technology. We specialize in braces and aligners for children, teens, and adults. We want you to spread joy with your smile!
How did you get started?
This dream started when I was fifteen years old and had braces myself. I loved the experience so much; I knew then this is what I was meant to do! I went to college at the University of Georgia and graduated with a degree in Biology. Next, I moved to Birmingham to attend dental school and was blessed to get to stay here for residency too! That is eleven years of school after high school. It’s a long road, but I would do it all over again in a heartbeat.
Why do you do it?
I love the feeling I get when I am helping others achieve a healthy smile. It is challenging and exhilarating to getting to combine my knowledge of art and science to create beautiful smiles. There is NOTHING better than looking at the before and after pictures of my patient’s teeth when they get their braces off or their Invisalign treatment is finished. It is so gratifying and will never get old! Being confident with your smile can create a great first impression and increase your self-confidence too! It’s such an amazing gift to give someone.
What are your most inspiring/motivating moments in business?
I had two moms in the office a couple of weeks ago that were bringing their daughters to me for early treatment. Not every child needs early treatment, but there are certain instances that do. Both sweet mamas looked at me with tears in their eyes because coming to me means one thing. Their babies are growing up. It is such an awesome responsibility to care of someone else’s child. It’s something that I don’t take lightly. As a mama myself, I literally ask myself with every patient- if this was my son, what would I do? I filter all my treatment decisions through my mama lens.
One piece of advice for moms starting a business?
It’s okay to ask for help! When I was starting my business, I befriended female orthodontists all over the country! You would be amazed how kind people are and how most people are more than willing to help! I would ask them how they did things, best practices, etc. Also, find your tribe! I met five other female orthodontists that either opened their startups right when I did or are opening in the next few months. Giving back is so important to me and I did not want any of us to feel alone in this process of starting a business. I brought us all together and we have a group text that we share marketing ideas, bounce practice management ideas off each other, etc.
Anything else you want us to know?
I love what I do! Seriously. It does not feel like a job. I really like treating adults as well as kids. It fun to see an adult invest in their smile after they have taken care of all their children. That’s one cool thing about being an orthodontist. I see all ages! I’m also board-certified. This is not a requirement to be a practicing orthodontist, but it was important to me to challenge myself to achieve the highest level of education. If you come to my practice you will see me every time and get excellent attention and care. I’m so grateful that the Lord blessed me with the chance to be an orthodontist and I get to come to work everyday to do what I love!
