Mom Behind the Business: Christen Colvert - Christen Colvert Art

It's time for another week of our “Mom Behind the Business” series featuring local MOM business owners! We're bringing a new Mom Business Owner to the table for a little Q&A to gain some insight into her business and the advice she can pass on to other mamas.

This week we interviewed Christen Colvert - the super chill, artsy mama behind Christen Colvert Art in Birmingham, AL. Christen's landscapes are so dreamy AND she is launching a new collection this week! {We should also mention - Village Insiders can enjoy a 10% off Village Perk when shopping with Christen!}

What is your business?

Christen Colvert Art, I sell watercolor and acrylic landscape paintings.

How did you get started?

I’ve loved art since I was a kid, always taking classes whenever I had the opportunity. I earned a BFA with a concentration in graphic design from Auburn University during which I took many fine art classes. I worked in magazine design until I had my third son. It was then God opened up a sweet opportunity to teach art classes at a local preschool where my children were enrolled. That became a catalyst to get me back to using my hands and getting dirty! Last year when my youngest went to big school is when I started to set aside structured time to paint. I started doing a few pop-up shops and selling on Instagram.

Why do you do it?

Painting makes my spirit come alive. To me, it’s worship to the Father to use my gifting. I come away filled up every time I paint. It’s a huge honor for me to get to paint something for someone else’s home.

What are your most inspiring/motivating moments in business?

Seeing other women that are killing it in business gives me the encouragement to go after it! I've got several friends in business that have been such a support and advice to me all along the way. Also - The day I sold my first painting to a complete stranger (not a friend or family member) I was empowered and felt legit.

One piece of advice for moms starting a business?

If you have a desire stirring in your heart that won’t quiet down - go for it! Start with what you have - time, talent, resources - and let it grow. If it is something that fills you up, you won’t regret acting on it. Putting yourself out there is hard, you don’t know how you are going to be accepted or if you are going to be liked. But it’s worth it to let go of any fear and walk in faith.
